Interview! Laura George Art + Illustration
Laura George Art + Illustration

Tell us bit about yourself, your company.
LGA: I'm an artist and illustrator based in Chicago, Illinois. I work primarily with gouache, acrylic, and ink, and my art is currently centered around dreamlike lands, surreal characters, and smatterings of pattern. I've shown my work in group & solo showings around the US, Canada, and Australia and I do freelance illustration work as well as murals and private commissions. When I'm not painting or drawing, I like to spend my time on yoga, my guitar, dreaming of the ocean, reading, traveling to distant lands, enjoying coffee, and taking pictures.
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
LGA: I think I probably wanted to be a unicorn. And a ballerina. And a singer. But mostly the unicorn.
Is there a certain person, place or object you draw inspiration from?
LGA: Hm, for me, honestly I think inspiration comes from everywhere & kind of seeps into your consciousness. I do get a lot of ideas from my dreams, however, and also often when I'm driving long distances.
If you had no boundaries: money, time, space, support, etc. what dream project would you pursue?
LGA: I would first travel all over the world for about 3 years & spend a good bit of time in each spot. While traveling, I would work on my children's book (or three)... it's always been a dream of mine. I would also love to do collaborative murals with artists from other countries.
What’s your favorite thing to do to kill time? Any secret Internet time wasters, guilty pleasures?
LGA: Oh, I get sucked into that internet, that's for sure. But it's not my favorite one... my favorite thing to do to kill time would be to sit on a beach by the ocean & just be. Although I guess I actually find that quite productive, in reality. :)
Where do you like to go when you just want to get away? A beach, a mall, a market? What’s your favorite type of spot to go unwind.
LGA: I live in Chicago so it's fairly hectic. Within the city, I like to go to the conservatory on the south side... it feels tropical and the energy is nice inside. I also go & sit by Lake Michigan as much as possible in the summer. I love to travel & some favorite places have been Kawaii (HI) and Bali, and I love the mountains & desert... Southern Utah is so amazingly beautiful.
If you only had one more meal to eat on this world what would it be? (It can be several courses)
LGA: Sushi, seaweed salad, miso soup, dark chocolate, coffee, some good tostadas with lots of cilantro, pad ped catfish with sticky rice, a whole bunch of crazy cheeses, a big bottle of red wine. Those things don't go together at all, but they would all need to be consumed if it was my last meal. I would be very sad.
What do you love most about UCU’s Summer Show?
LGA: I've never done it before, but I'm very excited!
Tell readers what they should expect to see when they stop by and see you at UCU.
LGA: I will have lots of prints & notes & buttons & paintings & stickers & i will love you.
