Thea Starr: Interview!
Check out the interview below featuring Thea Starr and make sure to visit her and her original works at the Summer Show!
Tell us bit about yourself, your company.
TS- I'm Thea, a native Washingtonian, textile artist and mother of 4. My company consists of myself and my teenage daughter who helps me out at shows. For a few years now I've been exclusively using vintage kimono fabrics for my work.
When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
TS- Wonder Woman. Who doesn't want an invisible plane?
Is there a certain person/place/object you draw inspiration from?
TS- I love the beach. I can spend all day beach combing and come home with new ideas for pieces.
If you had no boundaries: money, time, space, support, etc. what dream project would you pursue?
TS- My dream project is a full wall mural of my kanzashi. I think it would be a beautiful display of recycled fabrics. I just need to convince someone to give me their wall :)
What’s your favorite thing to do to kill time? Any secret Internet time wasters, guilty pleasures?
TS- I like to listen my iPod and sing horribly.
Where do you like to go when you just want to get away? A beach, a mall, a market? What’s your favorite type of spot to go unwind.
TS- There is a hammock in my mom's back yard and I can hear the water at the beach while I sit in it. At nighttime you can see all the stars. It's the best place on Earth.
If you only had one more meal to eat on this world what would it be? (It can be several courses!)
TS- Tough one, I'm going to go with Japanese chicken curry with rice. Yum!
What do you love about most UCU’s Summer Show?
TS- Hands down the customers. Not only are they supporting us in the handmade art community but they are just super fun to meet and talk to. Selling stuff online is fine and dandy but having the chance to talk to your customers in person is the best.
Tell our readers what they should expect to see when they stop by and see you at UCU.
TS- Bright bold colors, hundreds of vintage kimono fabric flowers and a couple vintage kimono.
