Tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your work.
My name is Sara Lanzillotta and I own Devout. I have been making dolls, plush, monsters and other fabric accessories since 1998, selling them in various stores and galleries locally and across the U.S. In 2001 I was lucky enough to have my pieces in a group show at the Seattle Art Museum. I like to describe my work as super cute with a touch of creepy and a nice dose of humor. For some reason I find it hilarious to take something uber cute and give it two heads. Making things out of the ordinary, that makes people do a double take and provides a little joy during tough times. Life is serious but that doesn't mean our toys and favorite things have to be too.

What are some sources of inspiration for your work?
I love classic fairytales and childhood stories, fantasies and sci-fi and mysteries. I love nature and animals and plants. Every time I go to a forest or a take a walk I get the urge to make something. Also pop culture and TV and movies are always a big thing for me. I watch way too much TV while I'm working, I'll admit, I'm addicted!

What was the best thing you did with your summer?
I did a lot of traveling this year, which I don't usually get a chance to do, so that was a big thrill.  I went to Portland for two fun shows (Vampires and Blythe dolls!) went to San Diego for Comicon (amazing, you'll be seeing that influence show up a lot!), visited family in Massachusetts, and went camping in the Pacific Northwest with my hubby (I heart campfires!).

Are you showcasing anything new at the winter UCU show?
I always try to do a lot of new things mixed with my classic stuff. I think making new things keeps my fires burning. Definitely more unicorns and more fantasy stuff and some fun pop culture things. Surprised you will be (that's my Yoda impression, pretty good, right?)

What are you most excited about for UCU?
Seeing all my friends, that includes other vendors and customers. One of the greatest things about UCU is the feeling of being part of an awesome crafty community. We're all cheerleaders for each other, whether you're on the selling or buying side of things. It just feels nice to be surrounded by so many people who love being there and doing what they do.  Go team!

See more of Sara's work here and be sure to stop by the winter show and say hi!
