Vendor Interview- Girl with a Hook

Tell our readers a little bit about yourself and your work.
I'm Heather from Girl with a Hook, www.girlwithahook.com, for starters. I started crocheting in college in 2002 and have been freeforming ever since. I started in St. Louis, but really got involved in the craft scene and learned how to spin my own yarn once I moved to Chicago in 2003. I've recently moved out west to Oregon and have since learned to wash and dye my own wool. I'm just a few steps away from having the sheep in my backyard!
My hats and accessories that I make are all one of a kind pieces and no patterns are ever used. Even if I try to duplicate a piece, it's always different.
What are some sources of inspiration for your work?
My original inspirations are Ana Voog, www.anacam.com, and Pluckyfluff, www.pluckyfluff.com.
I'm also inspired by my everyday surroundings whether it be tide pools on the coast or moss on the tree in my backyard. Music is another huge inspiration of mine, I've lately been naming hats after songs of bands I love. I mainly just love textures and colors!
What was the best thing you did with your summer?
I attended a fabulous yarn workshop/festival in Placerville, CA. It was called Yarnival and was hosted by Lexi Boeger of Pluckyfluff. Being surrounded by so many creative people was very inspiring. It involved camping in a vineyard with an open studio for yarn spinning and selling my goods. An amazing time that I'll be doing every summer from now on!
Are you showcasing anything new at the winter UCU show?
Every hat I make is new since I don't use any patterns. I never know what new creation I'll be bringing with me!
What are you most excited about for UCU?
I'm excited to experience my first Seattle craft fair! Can't wait to meet a ton of new creative people!
